Haffner Energy and Ignis P2X Launch AeroVerde Bio and e-SAF Project in Spain
Haffner Energy and Ignis P2X have launched the AeroVerde project, aimed at producing bioSAF and e-SAF from residual biomass in Spain. The initial phase focuses on selecting a site optimized for local biomass availability and proximity to future offtakers.
Haffner Energy's technology converts residual biomass into hydrogen-rich syngas, which can be processed into bioSAF through methods such as Alcohol-to-Jet and Fischer-Tropsch. The project also aims to produce e-SAF by combining excess biogenic CO2 from syngas production with renewable hydrogen from Ignis P2X.
This initiative aligns with the EU's ReFuelEU Aviation mandate requiring a 6% SAF blend by 2030, amidst growing regulatory pressure on the European SAF market. In 2024, SAF constituted only 0.6% of EU aviation fuel, primarily sourced from used cooking oil and waste animal fats, with a significant portion imported from Asia.
