Heifer International Launches $4M Green Dairy Investment Program for 20,000 Farmers in Uganda
The Green Dairy Investment Program, valued at Shs14 billion ($4 million), will support 20,000 dairy farmers in Southwestern Uganda over three years. Implemented by Heifer International with funding from aBi Development Ltd, the initiative aims to boost milk output through climate-smart practices, including improving breeds, nutrition, and disease management. The program focuses on enhancing productivity and market access while promoting sustainable production systems to build resilience against environmental shocks.

The Green Dairy Investment Program, worth Shs14 billion ($4 million), aims to benefit 20,000 dairy farmers in Southwestern Uganda over three years. Implemented by Heifer International and funded by aBi Development Ltd, the program seeks to increase milk output through climate-smart practices.
It will enhance breeds, nutrition, and animal disease management. The dairy industry contributes approximately 11% to Uganda's GDP, with production at an estimated 5.4 billion liters annually. The program emphasizes green technologies, structured dairy hubs, and aims to support farmers in adopting solar energy and improving pastures. It aligns with the Uganda Dairy Industry Sustainability Roadmap, focusing on long-term sustainability and resilience against environmental challenges.
