Helen to Construct 400 kV Power Cable in Helsinki to Meet Increased Electricity Demand
Helen plans to build a 400 kV power cable connecting Sörnäs and Gammelstaden in Helsinki, capable of transmitting as much electricity as the Lovisa nuclear power plants combined. Fingrid is also completing a similar cable this year, linking Gammelstaden with Västersundom. The projects respond to rising electricity needs from district heating and maritime operations, including plans for electric ferry services. Residents in Kyrkslätt express health concerns regarding electromagnetic fields from the cable, which authorities have deemed not harmful.

Helen will construct a 400 kV cable in Helsinki linking Sörnäs and Gammelstaden, able to transmit electricity equivalent to the combined output of the Lovisa nuclear power plants. Fingrid is nearing completion of a similar 400 kV cable connecting Gammelstaden to Västersundom.
The projects address increased electricity demands from maritime activities and the electrification of district heating. Concerns have arisen among Kyrkslätt residents about health risks associated with electromagnetic fields from the cable, although the Radiation Safety Authority has assessed no health threat is posed by such installations.
