Hempfield Area Schools to Pilot AI Weapon Detection System Developed by Carnegie Mellon
Hempfield Area School District will pilot an AI-powered weapon detection system developed by CurvePoint, a Pittsburgh-based company collaborating with Carnegie Mellon University. The system, referred to as Wi-AI, utilizes Wi-Fi signals to detect concealed weapons in schools.
The pilot program will involve 15 school districts, with Hempfield Area set to implement the system by January 2026. The annual fee for monitoring the system is $60,000 for the first three years. CurvePoint aims to enhance the system's capabilities to detect various weapons, including knives and ghost guns, in the future.
Wi-AI has demonstrated 95% accuracy in identifying concealed weapons during lab tests. Hempfield Area has previously invested in security measures, including the ZeroEyes system and metal detectors, but aims to improve upon these with this new technology.
