Hidroelectrica Faces Challenges in Hydropower Investments Amid Siemens Energy Partnership
Hidroelectrica's general director Bogdan Badea highlights insufficient support for hydroelectric power in Europe, impacting investment continuity. The company is modernizing its Iron Gate 1 hydropower plant with Siemens Energy, securing seven new transformers to enhance operational efficiency.

Hidroelectrica is modernizing its Iron Gate 1 hydropower plant, securing seven transformers from Siemens Energy under a 62-month contract worth RON 117.1 million (EUR 23 million). The plant generates 4 to 5 TWh annually and aims to extend its operational life by 30 years.
Despite holding 6.3 gigawatts of hydro capacity, Badea notes that bureaucratic hurdles and lack of support for hydropower investments hinder progress in Romania. The procurement aligns with a strategic priority for maintaining safety and efficiency in the electricity sector. Continued reliance on outdated technologies raises concerns about system pressure and storage capacity needs.
