Hidroelectrica Secures Siemens Energy Partnership for Modernization Efforts
Hidroelectrica has entered a contract with Siemens Energy to upgrade its Iron Gate 1 plant, aiming to enhance operational longevity. The investment highlights ongoing challenges in Romania's hydropower sector, particularly bureaucratic obstacles that may impede future growth.

Hidroelectrica is set to modernize its Iron Gate 1 hydropower facility, having secured seven transformers from Siemens Energy through a contract worth RON 117.1 million (EUR 23 million) for a duration of 62 months. This plant has an annual generation capacity of 4 to 5 TWh and intends to extend its operational life by 30 years.
Despite an existing hydro capacity of 6.3 gigawatts, the sector faces bureaucratic challenges and insufficient backing for hydropower investments in Romania. The initiative is crucial for ensuring safety and efficiency in electricity supply, especially as reliance on outdated technologies raises concerns over system pressures and storage capabilities.
