Himachal Pradesh Launches Geothermal Apple Cold Storage and Hydro Project Review
Himachal Pradesh's new geothermal-powered cold storage facility in Kinnaur aims to support local agriculture sustainably. The 450 MW Shongtong-Karcham Hydro Project is on track for completion by 2027, enhancing energy self-reliance.

The world's first geothermal-powered apple cold storage and fruit drying unit in Kinnaur, developed by HPMC and an Icelandic firm, has a capacity of 1,000 tonnes and has processed 16,963 kg of fruits over two years. This initiative is significant for local farmers, utilizing geothermal heat to promote sustainable agricultural practices.
Concurrently, the 450 MW Shongtong-Karcham Hydroelectric Project is 75% complete, with a target to finish the first phase by January 2027. Once operational, it will generate approximately 1,579 million units of electricity annually, contributing nearly Rs 900 crore to the state economy. The successful implementation of these projects may bolster Himachal Pradesh's energy independence and agricultural sustainability.
