Hirono, Fukushima Launches Rice-Based Carbon Credit Project with Faeger
Hirono in Fukushima Prefecture partners with Faeger to create carbon credits from climate-friendly rice cultivation, enhancing income for local farmers. The project will utilize low-emission farming techniques to generate government-certified J-Credits, supporting Japan's carbon neutrality targets by 2050.

The town of Hirono, Fukushima Prefecture, has partnered with agricultural decarbonisation firm Faeger to produce carbon credits through sustainable rice farming. Farmers will implement mid-season drainage and biochar use to reduce methane emissions and generate government-certified J-Credits.
Revenue will be reinvested in improving cultivation conditions. The initiative aligns with Japan’s goals of carbon neutrality by 2050 and a 46% reduction in emissions by 2030. Local Koshihikari rice will be marketed as 'Hirono rice,' emphasizing environmental sustainability and high quality. The project, part of a pilot model, aims to share results across the Hamadori region and nationally.
