Holtec Delays Restart of Palisades Nuclear Plant in Michigan to Late March 2026
Holtec International has postponed the restart of the Palisades nuclear power plant in Michigan from December 2023 to late March 2026 due to necessary component upgrades and ongoing inspections of cracked cooling tubes. The 800-MW plant, decommissioned since 2022, plans to add two small modular reactors and has secured a $1.52 billion loan from the U.S. Energy Department, aiming to support U.S. energy needs and extend its operating license to 2051. Other nuclear projects in Pennsylvania and Iowa are also facing similar challenges in their restart efforts.

Holtec International has delayed the restart of the Palisades nuclear power plant in Michigan, originally set for December 2023, to possibly late March 2026 due to necessary component upgrades. The 800-MW plant, decommissioned since 2022, aims to support U.S. energy needs amid growing demand.
Holtec plans to add two small modular reactors, each 340 MW, and has received significant funding, including a $1.52 billion loan from the U.S. Energy Department. Inspections of the steam generator components are ongoing following the discovery of cracked cooling tubes.
The plant seeks to extend its operating license to 2051. Meanwhile, other nuclear projects in Pennsylvania and Iowa also aim for restarts amid similar challenges.
