Holtec Submits NRC License Application for Palisades SMR-300 Construction Permit
Holtec International has submitted its first major licensing application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the Palisades SMR-300 Units, Pioneer 1 and 2, which includes a request for a limited work authorization and a comprehensive environmental report.
The NRC is expected to review this application by December 31, 2026, enabling the construction of two small modular reactors at the Palisades Energy Center in Covert, Michigan. Holtec aims to complete the SMR-300 plant by the early 2030s.
The company is also working to restart the existing Palisades unit by early 2026, following a delay due to issues with the steam generating system. Holtec intends to apply for a license renewal for the Palisades plant in Q1 2026, potentially extending its operating period to 2051.
