Honolulu to Reconsider Gondola Project Permit Amid Safety and Environmental Concerns
The City and County of Honolulu's Department of Planning and Permitting will hold a public hearing on January 12 to reconsider a conditional use permit for a gondola project on Oahu's North Shore, originally approved in 2019. The reevaluation is prompted by safety concerns from the U.S. Army regarding nearby live-fire training zones and potential environmental impacts on protected species. A decision from the DPP is expected within 30 days after the hearing, alongside proposed legislation to improve public notice for agricultural permits.

The City and County of Honolulu's Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) will hold a public hearing on January 12 regarding the reevaluation of a conditional use permit for a gondola project on Oahu's North Shore. Originally approved in 2019, the permit is under scrutiny due to new evidence, including safety concerns from the U.S.
Army regarding live-fire training zones nearby, and environmental impacts on protected species and habitats. The DPP is also investigating whether Kaukonahua Ranch has complied with agricultural development conditions outlined in the permit.
Recent public testimony has significantly increased since the initial approval. A written decision from DPP is expected within 30 days post-hearing, coinciding with proposed legislation from Councilmember Matt Weyer to enhance public notice requirements for agricultural permits.
