HPCL Inaugurates Sustainable Aviation Fuel Demonstration Plant at Visakh Refinery

NATURAL GASSUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has inaugurated a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) demonstration plant at its Visakh Refinery. The plant will produce SAF by co-processing used cooking oil (UCO) in the refinery's Full Conversion Hydrocracker Unit.

This initiative is part of India's goal to achieve SAF blending targets of 1% by 2027, 2% by 2028, and 5% by 2030, as stated by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Following CORSIA certification, the refinery aims to produce approximately 10 TMT of SAF annually from January 2027.

This project supports India's commitment to decarbonizing aviation and promoting a circular economy. Various organizations, including Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Limited, are involved in SAF production and research. CORSIA, adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is a global measure to reduce emissions from international aviation.
