Hungary to Receive Four New Gripen Fighter Jets by June 2026
Hungary's Ministry of Defense will expand its Gripen fighter jet fleet with the addition of four new aircraft arriving at Kecskemét air base by June 30, 2026. This decision follows discussions between Parliamentary State Secretary Tamás Vargha and Swedish officials. Currently, Hungary operates 14 Gripens, which have been active in various missions, including Baltic air policing. The total Gripen fleet will increase to 18 jets, reflecting Hungary's commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities amid evolving security challenges.

The Hungarian Air Force currently operates 14 Gripens that have protected airspace over Hungary, Slovenia, and Slovakia for 20 years. The fleet expansion to 18 jets is part of Hungary's defense strategy, with over 40% of the defense budget allocated to military equipment development. Minister of Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky confirmed this initiative on social media.
