HURIWA Criticizes Imo State Governor's Unfulfilled Promise of Uninterrupted Electricity Supply
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has criticized Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma for failing to deliver on his promise of uninterrupted electricity supply since November last year. HURIWA highlighted that only 15% of Imo residents can afford solar power or expensive fuel for generators, forcing many small businesses to close.
The group noted that families spent an average of N250,000 on fuel during the Christmas season, while many remained in darkness. The governor's earlier statements indicated a test run for electricity supply in Owerri and surrounding areas, supported by the Urashi Power Plant Project.
HURIWA also called for improvements in rural healthcare, road networks, and security, urging the reconstruction of burnt police stations. The organization proposed the establishment of an independent human rights monitoring commission to oversee the activities of newly formed vigilante groups in the state.
