Hyundai Rotem Develops HyCore Hypersonic Weapon with Mach 6 Capability
Hyundai Rotem, in collaboration with the Agency for Defense Development, is developing the HyCore hypersonic weapon, which aims to exceed Mach 6. This weapon is designed to fly at lower altitudes than traditional ballistic missiles and maneuver unpredictably, complicating interception efforts. Testing in 2024 showed speeds of approximately 7340 km/h at an altitude of 23 km. Full-scale production is projected to begin around 2035, allowing time to address engineering and material challenges.

Hyundai Rotem is advancing its hypersonic weapon program, HyCore, in partnership with the Agency for Defense Development since 2018. The weapon aims to exceed Mach 6, reaching speeds of about 7340 km/h during tests in 2024 at an altitude of 23 km.
Unlike traditional ballistic missiles, HyCore is designed to fly lower and maneuver during flight, making it harder to predict and intercept. Full-scale production is expected to start around 2035, providing a decade to tackle challenges such as high-temperature materials and propulsion reliability.
