IAAC Declines Full Assessment for Pictou County Gas Plants
The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada will not conduct full assessments for two proposed gas power plants in Pictou County. While the agency notes potential adverse effects, it believes these can be managed under existing regulations.

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) has decided against full federal impact assessments for two proposed 300-megawatt natural gas plants in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. The IAAC stated that although the projects may have adverse effects, they would likely be mitigated by existing laws.
The Independent Energy System Operator (IESO) submitted the projects for assessment, emphasizing the need for the plants to support a transition to renewable energy. Local residents and advocacy groups, however, contest the decision, citing concerns over environmental impacts and the protection of species like Atlantic salmon. The gas plants have received provincial environmental approval but require further industrial and water withdrawal permits before proceeding.
