IAF Initiates Development of Indigenous Kamikaze Drones
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is developing long-range kamikaze drones in partnership with local industry, marking a shift in its procurement approach. This initiative aims to enhance domestic defense manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign technology.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has launched a project to develop indigenous long-range kamikaze drones, issuing a tender enquiry to selected Indian companies on June 12. The drones must be designed, developed, and manufactured in India, with the 5 Base Repair Depot (BRD) at Sulur, Coimbatore, overseeing the project.
The IAF will retain ownership of the intellectual property rights (IPR) for future modifications. The specifications include a fixed-wing design, operation at 16,000 feet, and a payload capacity of at least 30 kg.
The drone must not use any Chinese-origin technology and must support fully autonomous operations. A complete maintenance ecosystem will also be established at user premises. This shift in approach reflects a focus on the 'Make in India' initiative.
