IAF Plans Rs 5,500 Crore Expansion of MRSAM Systems with BEL and BDL
DEFENSE
The Indian Air Force (IAF) intends to procure Rs 5,500 crore in Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) systems from Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL). This deal may include 3-5 additional squadrons, complementing the existing nine.
BDL will supply missiles and BEL will provide radar and electronics. Each new squadron is estimated to cost between Rs 1,000-1,100 crore. The MRSAM systems, developed by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries, offer 360-degree air defense with an interception range of 70-100 km. The development reflects a focus on multi-layered air defense amid evolving aerial threats.
