IEA Reduces 2030 Clean Hydrogen Production Forecast by 40%
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has revised its projection for clean hydrogen production by 2030, reducing the expected operational capacity by 40%. This significant decrease reflects ongoing project delays and regulatory uncertainties that are hindering investment in the clean hydrogen sector.

The IEA has cut its forecast for operational clean hydrogen production to just over 6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) by 2030, down from 10 mtpa. The total project pipeline stands at 27 mtpa, with 22 mtpa at risk unless final investment decisions are made within the next year.
Demand for low-emissions hydrogen remains weak, impacting investment momentum. China leads global hydrogen deployment, but domestic market pressures are emerging. In Europe, large-scale projects are expected to begin in 2026, contingent on regulatory developments. Without decisive action and clarity on incentives, the sector may struggle to meet its decarbonisation goals.
