IESO NS Submits Natural Gas Plant Proposal in Pictou County Amid Water Concerns
The Independent Energy Systems Operator Nova Scotia (IESO NS) has proposed a natural gas plant in Pictou County, with applications due by December 31. Local council members raised concerns about water usage and potential well depletion, prompting the development of a comprehensive agreement to address these issues. Environmental assessments for the proposed sites will be publicly available from December 22 to February 9, and a groundwater withdrawal permit is required from the Department of Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change.

Independent Energy Systems Operator Nova Scotia (IESO NS) has completed a framework for a natural gas plant to be built in either Salt Springs or Marshdale, with an application due by December 31 for review by the Municipality of Pictou County Council. At a Property and Finance Committee meeting on December 16, councillors emphasized the importance of addressing water usage and protecting local water rights.
Warden Robert Parker highlighted concerns about potential well depletion. Public works director Logan McDowell confirmed that a more comprehensive development agreement is being developed, which will include provisions for addressing water concerns.
Environmental assessments for both proposed sites will be available to the public from December 22 to February 9. The project requires a groundwater withdrawal permit from the Department of Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change, with ongoing water resource monitoring.
