IIT-Hyderabad Unveils Largest Indigenous Metal Powder Facility for Aerospace
IIT-Hyderabad has launched India's largest indigenous clean metal powder manufacturing facility, with a capacity of 100 kg, targeting aerospace and additive manufacturing. This initiative, in collaboration with DRDO's DMRL and Innomet Advanced Materials Ltd., aims to enhance India's self-reliance in high-performance materials.
IIT-Hyderabad has initiated the establishment of a clean metal and alloy powder manufacturing facility, which will utilize gas atomisation technology to produce high-quality powders with low oxygen content. Supported by the Defence Technology Development Fund (DFTM) and partnered with Innomet Advanced Materials Ltd. and DRDO's Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, the facility aims to produce nickel-based superalloys, cobalt-based alloys, and high-entropy alloys.
This project is set to reduce dependence on imported powders, streamline production timelines, and bolster India's aerospace and defense capabilities, while also fostering future research in advanced materials. The strategic nature of this facility could significantly enhance India's position in global manufacturing.
