IMO Develops Work Plan for Battery Ships, Wind Propulsion, and Nuclear Safety Regulations

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

The IMO's SDC Sub-Committee is establishing a work plan to adapt maritime safety regulations in light of new energy technologies like large-capacity batteries, wind propulsion, and nuclear power. This plan, finalized at the SDC 12 meeting in London from January 19-23, 2026, seeks to bridge the gap between technological innovation and existing safety norms, particularly those outlined in the SOLAS convention.

Key issues include managing risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, ensuring structural stability for wind systems, and updating the nuclear safety code. The plan will be submitted to the MSC in May 2026, with milestones for SOLAS amendments in 2028 and 2029, and a revised nuclear code by 2030.
