Increase in Nickel Ore Exports from Philippines and Solomon Islands Raises Safety Concerns
Nickel ore exports from the Philippines and Solomon Islands have surged significantly since 2024, driven by global demand. This increase raises concerns about the safe transport of nickel ore due to its properties that lead to potential cargo instability during shipping.

Since 2024, the volume of nickel ore exported from the Philippines and the Solomon Islands has risen sharply due to increased mining investments. This trend is linked to heightened demand for nickel, particularly in electric vehicle production.
Nickel ore, primarily direct-shipped with minimal processing, presents challenges related to moisture content and cargo stability, often leading to issues like liquefaction. The International Group of P&I Clubs and INTERCARGO have issued guidelines emphasizing the need for accurate moisture content assessments and proper sampling practices.
Cargo inspections are crucial during transit to prevent accidents. Failure to notify relevant authorities regarding nickel ore shipments may impact insurance coverage.
