Independent Review Finds Inpex Systematically Undercounted Emissions at Ichthys LNG Since 2018
An independent review has determined that Inpex's emissions from the Ichthys LNG project have been systematically underestimated since 2018, affecting public health assessments. The review follows Inpex's admission of a significant underreporting of benzene emissions, revised from four to over 500 tonnes. The NT EPA has indicated that the risk to human health remains low despite these findings, but calls for a public inquiry have emerged from environmental groups.

Inpex's Ichthys LNG project has been found to have systematically underestimated emissions since 2018, compromising public health assessments, according to an independent review. The company admitted to underreporting benzene emissions from four tonnes to over 500 tonnes.
The NT Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA) has launched investigations into these discrepancies. The review highlighted persistent errors in emissions reporting and noted that hazardous chemicals like formaldehyde and ammonia were omitted from reports.
Despite acknowledging reporting failures, the NT EPA stated that current benzene and toluene levels pose a low health risk. Calls for a public inquiry into Inpex's operations have been made by environmental advocates.
