India Advances Directed Energy Weapons for Space and Air Defense
India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is advancing Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs), focusing on high-power laser systems for air and space defense. The shift aims to address vulnerabilities in traditional kinetic defense against low-cost drones and enhance capabilities post-2019's Mission Shakti.

India's DRDO, through its Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), is developing Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs) to counter emerging threats from unmanned aerial systems and space-based assets. The operational validation of the Laser Directed Weapon MK-II(A) demonstrates its capabilities against drones, with plans for a 100-kW and eventually a 300-kW version under Project DURGA-II.
The use of high-power pulse lasers is critical to overcoming atmospheric distortion, allowing for effective engagement of satellites in low-Earth orbit. Challenges remain in power supply, thermal management, and integration into broader defense networks, but successful development could mark a significant advancement in India's military capabilities.
