India Advances Nuclear Energy with ₹20,000 Crore for Small Modular Reactors and Water Purification in Assam
FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER
India's recent Union Budget 2025-26 has allocated ₹20,000 crore for the research and deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), reinforcing the government's commitment to nuclear technology amid rising energy demands. BARC has also created water purification systems to address contamination from annual floods in Assam.
Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh affirmed the technology's applicability for Northeast communities. India currently has 8.78 GW nuclear capacity, with projects like the BSMR-200 and SMR-55 set to enhance this. The country aims to reach 22 GW by 2031-32 and 100 GW by 2047, benefiting from customs duty waivers on reactor components.
