India Aims for Solar Self-Sufficiency by 2026 with Increased PLI Support in Budget

SOLAR ENERGY

India is focusing on achieving end-to-end self-sufficiency in solar manufacturing within four to five years, covering the entire supply chain from polysilicon to finished solar panels. The country aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070, with solar energy usage increasing due to supportive government policies.

INA Solar, a leading domestic player, operates three manufacturing units with a cumulative capacity of 1.53 GW and plans to expand to 7 GW. They are investing over ₹3,000 crore in solar component manufacturing for upcoming projects.

However, India still relies on imports for critical materials such as wafers and polysilicon, particularly from China. With the upcoming budget, expectations include increased Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) support for upstream segments and expedited project approvals. India’s power generation capacity is approximately 462 GW, with renewable energy seen as essential for the future.
