India and Germany Progress Talks on Six Conventional Submarines amid Defence Cooperation

DEFENSE

India is in advanced discussions with Germany for the acquisition of six conventional submarines as part of Project-75I, which aims to induct next-generation diesel-electric submarines. Although a deal has not been finalized, senior officials report positive momentum in technical, financial, and commercial discussions.

This announcement coincided with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to India, where defence cooperation was a focal point. A declaration of intent was signed to enhance bilateral defence industrial collaboration.

Germany's recent changes to defence export norms have facilitated faster procurement processes for India. The Indian Navy has opted for Germany's Type-214 submarine, noted for its fuel-cell-based air-independent propulsion (AIP) system. The ongoing negotiations reflect a strategic partnership that extends to various sectors, including potential transactions involving thyssenkrupp steel.
