India and Italy Strengthen Defense Ties After AgustaWestland Scandal
India and Italy have renewed their defense partnership, highlighted by the signing of a Defence Industrial Roadmap in May 2026. This evolution reflects the strategic necessity for both nations to enhance military cooperation amid shifting geopolitical landscapes.

India and Italy have signed a Defence Industrial Roadmap in May 2026, marking a significant renewal of their defense partnership. Following the cancellation of the AgustaWestland helicopter contract in 2014 due to a corruption scandal, defense ties between the two nations were severely impacted, affecting various military contracts and operational readiness.
Currently, India aims to localize defense production under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, requiring over 1,000 helicopters in the next decade. The partnership is expected to include co-production and technology transfer, particularly in naval systems where Italy has a strong presence.
Both countries are prioritizing establishing robust mechanisms to prevent future procurement disruptions, emphasizing the need for a standing dispute resolution channel and defined technology transfer benchmarks. As European defense spending rises, Italy is strategically positioned to support India's military modernization efforts, making this partnership crucial for both nations' defense strategies.
