India Considers Reviving Black Shark Torpedo Deal with Italy's WASS
The Indian Ministry of Defence is exploring the revival of a $200 million deal for Black Shark torpedoes from WASS for Scorpene submarines. The attorney general's recommendations suggest the contract should not be canceled due to operational needs of the Indian Navy.

The Indian Ministry of Defence is reconsidering a deal for 98 Black Shark torpedoes from Whitehead Sistemi Subacquei S.p.A. (WASS) for French Scorpene submarines, initially canceled in June 2022. The attorney general has advised against formally canceling the contract due to the operational impact on the Indian Navy, which may struggle to find suitable replacements at comparable costs.
If the deal proceeds, 20 torpedoes would be provided in fully formed condition, with the remaining 78 produced under license at Bharat Dynamics Limited in Hyderabad. Modifications to the submarines' torpedo tubes would be necessary for alternative torpedoes, potentially causing further delays.
