DEFENSE

The Indian Defence Ministry has signed contracts totaling ₹4,666 crore for the procurement of over 425,000 close-quarter battle (CQB) carbines and 48 heavyweight torpedoes. The ₹2,770 crore CQB carbine contract was awarded to Bharat Forge Ltd and PLR Systems, with deliveries expected within two years.

The carbines will replace outdated submachine guns and enhance the capabilities of Indian soldiers. The ₹1,896 crore contract for the torpedoes was signed with WASS Submarine Systems of Italy, with deliveries scheduled between April 2028 and early 2030.

These torpedoes will be integrated into the six Kalvari-class submarines built under Project 75. The new acquisitions aim to strengthen the operational readiness of the Indian Navy and support India's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.
