India is moving forward with a ₹99,000 crore deal to acquire six AIP submarines from Germany's Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. The Defence Acquisition Council has approved the project, which requires final clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security.
The submarines will be constructed in India by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, promoting local manufacturing under the 'Make in India' initiative. These submarines will significantly enhance India's underwater capabilities, with AIP technology allowing longer submerged durations. The Indian Navy currently operates 16 conventional submarines, and the new acquisition aims to replace aging Kilo-class submarines and bolster maritime deterrence.
