India to Order 114 Rafale Fighters for Air Force, Closing MRFA Contest
The Indian Government is poised to order 114 Rafale fighters for the Indian Air Force, potentially finalizing the Multirole Fighter Aircraft contest. This decision follows the IAF's proposal and operational validation during Operation Sindoor, with the deal estimated at over ₹2 lakh crore. Additionally, Russia is expected to deliver the fourth S-400 squadron to India by May 2026, enhancing the country's air defense capabilities amid ongoing regional tensions.

The Indian Government is reportedly moving towards a decision to order 114 Rafale fighters for the Indian Air Force (IAF), potentially concluding the Multirole Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) contest. This follows the IAF's formal proposal last year and recent operational validation during Operation Sindoor in early 2025.
The IAF aims to expand its existing fleet of 36 Rafales, acknowledging the significant investments already made in the platform. The deal, estimated to cost upwards of ₹2 lakh crore (approximately $24 billion), raises concerns about funding future fifth-generation stealth fighter projects like the AMCA. Meanwhile, Russia is set to deliver the fourth S-400 squadron to India by May 2026, part of a ₹40,000-crore contract, enhancing India's air defence capabilities amid regional tensions.
