Indian Army Operationalizes 7th Pinaka Rocket Launcher Regiment, Plans for 10 Regiments by 2026

DEFENSE

The Indian Army has operationalized its 7th Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher regiment as of March 2026. The Pinaka system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced with Larsen & Toubro and Tata Power, can fire 72 rockets in 44 seconds at targets up to 90 km away.

The 8th Pinaka regiment is under conversion and expected to be operational by the end of 2026. Each regiment consists of 18 launchers, each capable of firing 12 rockets rapidly. The Army has plans to field 10 regiments soon and expand to 22 regiments over the next decade, focusing on strengthening artillery along the borders with China and Pakistan. The new regiments include advanced technological upgrades and will gradually replace older BM‑21 Grad systems.
