Indian Coast Guard Modernizes Fleet with Digital Technology and Green Fuels
The Indian Coast Guard is modernizing its fleet through a partnership with the Indian Register of Shipping. This initiative focuses on integrating digital technologies and alternative fuels to enhance operational efficiency and bolster cybersecurity amid rising maritime threats.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is advancing its fleet modernization by collaborating with the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) to incorporate digital technologies and low-carbon fuels. This effort includes integrating unmanned surface vessels (USVs) and retrofitting existing vessels for biofuels, hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol, aligning with India's 2070 net-zero goals.
The fleet consists of over 150 vessels, with 22 classed by IRS to meet international safety standards. Enhanced cybersecurity measures, driven by IRS guidance, aim to protect vessels from evolving threats. The initiative, discussed during a seminar on March 19, 2026, may position ICG as a leader in green maritime defense, despite challenges like high costs and the need for crew retraining.
