Indian Navy's INS Surat Utilizes AI-ML in Operation Sindoor to Enhance Combat Readiness
The Indian Navy is leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to enhance operational capabilities, exemplified by the combat deployment of INS Surat during Operation Sindoor in the Arabian Sea. Commissioned in January 2025, INS Surat is the final Visakhapatnam-class destroyer built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.
It features advanced intelligent systems that improve data processing for surveillance and threat assessment, marking the first application of such technology in active operations. The Navy aims to integrate AI across various functions, including inventory management and training simulations.
The broader AI-ML strategy for defense, initiated in 2018, emphasizes collaboration across services and with industry partners to develop interoperable systems. With 75% indigenous content, INS Surat symbolizes India's capability in building advanced warships and integrating intelligent systems.
