India's ammonia production relies on imported natural gas for 77% of its feedstock, necessitating improved efficiency and innovation. The Fertiliser Association of India emphasizes the importance of modernizing aging plants to ensure competitiveness and sustainability.

India's ammonia production sector is highly dependent on imported natural gas, accounting for 77% of feedstock needs. Currently, 36 ammonia plants operate in the country with a total capacity of nearly 19 million tonnes.
The Fertiliser Association of India (FAI) has highlighted the need for operational efficiency and technological advancements, especially as many facilities are 25-50 years old. A recent forum in Durgapur involved over 50 engineers discussing maintenance, energy efficiency, and safety improvements.
The sector has notably reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 50% over the past four decades, showcasing its efficiency. Continuous investment in modernizing plants is essential for sustaining India's fertilizer production and security.
