India's Defense Export Landscape and Its Competition with Russia
India's defense exports are evolving, but significant reliance on Russian technology limits its competitiveness. The Indian military's inability to secure large orders hampers local production, prompting a search for foreign markets amid rising competition from China.

India's defense export strategy is increasingly focused on markets traditionally dominated by Russia. Despite India exporting systems like the BrahMos missile, which has a $375 million deal with the Philippines, much of the technology still relies on Russian input, particularly from the joint venture between DRDO and NPOM.
New Delhi is negotiating additional agreements with Vietnam and Indonesia, pending a No Objection Certificate from Russia. India's military has faced challenges in large-scale orders for indigenous systems, leading to a reliance on foreign markets.
Meanwhile, initiatives like the Light Combat Aircraft (HAL Tejas) face delays due to supply chain issues. Competing with Russia and China remains a significant hurdle, particularly in air defense systems.
