India's Energy Sector Faces Multiple Challenges and Opportunities in 2024
India's rare earth production reached an estimated 2,900 metric tons in 2024, making it the sixth-largest global producer. Concurrently, the country is addressing significant energy security challenges due to geopolitical tensions affecting LNG imports, which could reshape its long-term energy strategies.

In 2024, India produced approximately 2,900 metric tons of rare-earth oxide equivalent, ranking as the sixth-largest producer globally. Simultaneously, the country is facing critical challenges in energy security, particularly in liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, which account for nearly half of its natural gas supply.
Petronet LNG aims to enhance storage capacity by constructing new tanks across multiple terminals, addressing disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict, which halted supplies from Qatar and the UAE. Analysts indicate that prolonged supply issues could lead to higher LPG prices and shortages in domestic cooking gas, impacting consumers and public finances.
Furthermore, India may need to diversify its energy sourcing, with countries like Australia and the US becoming potential partners. The ongoing situation may prompt structural changes in India's energy strategy and infrastructure investments.
