India's Kaladan Project in Myanmar Faces Challenges Ahead of 2027 Deadline
The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) in Myanmar aims to be fully operational by 2027, contingent on the completion of the Paletwa-Zorinpui Road. A 109 km road segment in Chin State remains unfinished due to difficult terrain, inclement weather, and violent conflict among local armed groups.
The project, initiated in 2003, includes sea and river components and is essential for enhancing connectivity between India and Myanmar, as well as supporting India's Act East Policy. Political instability in the region, along with competition between the Arakan Army and the Chinland Defence Force, poses risks to project laborers and overall progress. If the deadline is missed, a multi-agency approach may be necessary to ensure effective project implementation.
