India's MoD Signs ₹4,666 Crore Contracts for CQB Carbines and Heavy Weight Torpedoes
The Indian Ministry of Defence signed contracts totaling ₹4,666 crore for close quarter battle (CQB) carbines and heavy weight torpedoes to enhance military capabilities. Contracts worth ₹2,770 crore with Bharat Forge Ltd and PLR Systems Pvt Ltd will provide over 425,000 CQB carbines for the Indian Army and Navy, aiming to replace outdated infantry weapons as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The compact carbines are designed for urban combat, signifying increased collaboration between government and private sectors. Additionally, a contract valued at approximately ₹1,896 crore was signed with WASS Submarine Systems SRL, Italy, for 48 heavy weight torpedoes for Kalvari-class submarines, with deliveries expected to start in April 2028 and complete by early 2030. These contracts are part of a broader modernization effort, with the MoD's capital acquisition contracts for FY26 reaching ₹1.82 lakh crore.
