Indigenous Groups Campaign to Preserve Donnel Point Settlement Site in Ingleside, Texas

DEFENSE

Indigenous groups in South Texas are advocating for the preservation of Donnel Point, a rediscovered ancient settlement site located between industrial complexes on Corpus Christi Bay. The site, documented in the 1930s but believed lost due to industrial development, was identified last year by local geologist Patrick Nye.

The Karankawa and Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas have requested the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to revoke a permit for an oil terminal at the site, which spans several hundred acres of undeveloped land.

Despite the site's significance, preservation efforts face challenges, including the need for new federal reviews and the influence of the oil and gas industry in Texas. The groups aim to secure the site as a cultural and historical landmark, reflecting the deep roots of Indigenous heritage in the region.
