Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program Supports Equity Stake in Ontario Transmission Line
The Canada Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program (CILGP) has issued a second loan backing Aamjiwnaang and Kettle and Stony Point First Nations in acquiring a 20% equity stake in the Chatham to Lakeshore Hydro One transmission line, valued at around $237 million. This follows the first loan issued in May 2024, enabling 36 First Nations in British Columbia to acquire a 12.5% stake in Enbridge's Westcoast natural gas pipeline.
The CILGP aims to remove systemic barriers for Indigenous groups in securing financing. The Chatham-to-Lakeshore line, operational since December 2024, improves grid reliability and meets rising electricity demand by delivering 400 megawatts to the Windsor-Essex Region. The nations expect stable cashflows from this investment.
