Indonesia Air Transport ATR 42-500 Aircraft Missing; Several Fatal Crashes Reported in 2023-2026

An ATR 42-500 aircraft owned by Indonesia Air Transport went missing during a flight from Yogyakarta to Makassar on January 17, 2026. The search revealed wreckage on Bulusaraung Peak in South Sulawesi.

This incident is the first plane crash of 2026 in Indonesia. Other recent crashes include a Microlight Quicksilver GT500 in Bogor on August 3, 2025, resulting in the death of Air Commodore Fajar Adriyanto, and a Tecnam P2006T crash in Serpong on May 19, 2024, killing three aviation association members.

Additionally, a Pilatus PC-6 Porter lost contact in March 2024, with the pilot rescued but the mechanic deceased. In November 2023, an Indonesian Air Force Super Tucano crash led to four fatalities. Other incidents include a SAM Air Cessna crash in Papua (June 2023) with all onboard lost, and a Hawker 900 XP crash in Central Sulawesi (May 2023) with no fatalities among eight onboard.
