Indonesia Launches Innovative Green Hydrogen Pilot Plant in Sumatra

In a significant stride towards sustainable energy, Indonesia's Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) has broken ground on an innovative green hydrogen pilot plant at its Ulubelu site in Sumatra. With an investment of $3 million, this facility aims to produce 100 kilograms of green hydrogen daily by 2026, utilizing advanced anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis technology, known for its high efficiency and environmental benefits. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to harness geothermal energy, expanding PGE's role beyond electricity sales and positioning Indonesia within the global clean energy supply chain.

PGE's president director, Julfi Hadi, emphasized the project's potential to transform Ulubelu into an innovation hub for green hydrogen production, which could pave the way for similar initiatives across the region. The integration of geothermal energy with modern electrolysis represents a critical step in Indonesia's energy transition, aligning with national goals to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. This venture not only addresses the pressing need for eco-friendly fuels but also holds promise for downstream applications, including the production of green ammonia and methanol.

As construction progresses, the stakes are high. Successful data collection on efficiency, hydrogen purity, and cost-effectiveness will determine the commercial viability of green hydrogen at scale. With nearly 10 million residents and a thriving industrial base, Lampung province is well-positioned to benefit from local hydrogen production.
