Indonesia Launches World’s First Geothermal-Based Green Hydrogen Pilot Plant in Lampung
In a significant stride towards sustainable energy, Indonesia has launched the world’s first geothermal-based green hydrogen pilot plant in Lampung, marked by a ceremonial groundbreaking event led by the Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstream Industries, Todotua Pasaribu. This pioneering project, developed by Pertamina Geothermal Energy, employs an innovative anion exchange membrane electrolyzer to generate green hydrogen, a crucial component in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Pasaribu emphasized the importance of this initiative in promoting the downstream sector of renewable energy and accelerating Indonesia's shift towards a green economy. The green energy pilot plant exemplifies the government's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2060, aligning with President Prabowo’s vision of fostering national independence through green energy and the advancement of resource-based industries for enhanced domestic value.
The project aims to produce 100 kilograms of hydrogen per day by November 2026, with the output intended not only for Pertamina Group but also for external partners like Toyota, who are focused on developing hydrogen-fueled vehicles. This strategic move highlights the role of green hydrogen in bolstering a sustainable economy, influencing everything from transportation fuels to industrial decarbonization.
Pasaribu noted that downstream industrialization has proven to be a key driver of future national economic growth, with a focus not only on mineral resources but also on harnessing green energy as a catalyst for efficient and competitive industrialization. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to promoting investment in green energy and the downstream sector while fostering collaboration among government entities, state-owned enterprises, private companies, and international partners to create a robust green energy ecosystem.
The Ulubelu green hydrogen project is poised to be a pivotal moment for Indonesia, strengthening its leadership role in the global energy transition. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yuliot Tanjung, and the Governor of Lampung, Rahmat Mirzani Djausal, showcasing the collective ambition to lead in sustainable energy solutions.
