Indonesia Seizes 4 Million Hectares of Resources Amid Governance Campaign

DEFENSE

Indonesia has seized over 4 million hectares of land, equivalent to a region the size of Switzerland, as part of a campaign overseen by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto to boost governance and control over natural resources. The campaign began in March with the confiscation of palm oil estates linked to corruption allegations.

The Forest Area Enforcement Task Force, led by Prabowo, has transferred much of the seized land to the state-owned Agrinas Palma Nusantara, now the largest palm oil operator globally. The campaign targets plantations, mining concessions, and processing facilities, with fines imposed on companies totaling around $2.26 billion.

Major companies such as Wilmar International and IOI Corporation are already feeling the impact. The government's actions have raised concerns over long-term consequences for domestic and global supply chains, particularly in coal, palm oil, nickel, and other essential commodities.
