Indonesian Military-TNPB Clash in West Papua Leaves 14 Dead Amid Increased Aerial Bombardments
A clash on October 16 between the Indonesian military and the West Papua National Liberation Army in Intan Jaya Regency resulted in 14 deaths, with the military facing advanced weaponry during the six-and-a-half hour battle. Following the confrontation, the Indonesian airforce escalated bombing in Kiwirok, reflecting a shift in combat strategy, while over 100,000 West Papuans have been displaced due to ongoing military actions linked to resource control in the region. The conflict is further complicated by the financial interests of military leaders in local mining operations and the enduring military autonomy in West Papua.

On 16 October, a clash in Soanggama, Intan Jaya Regency, between the Indonesian military (TNI) and the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) resulted in 14 fatalities. The TNI reported facing 'military-grade weapons' during a six-and-a-half hour battle, while seized weapons included a homemade rifle and air rifles.
The TPNPB claimed that only three deceased were associated with their armed struggle. Following the clash, the Indonesian airforce intensified bombing in Kiwirok, reflecting a strategy to avoid close combat.
The TNI's control over West Papua's resources, notably the Wabu Block gold mine, has led to increased military presence and checkpoints, exacerbating local tensions. Over 100,000 West Papuans are now internally displaced due to military actions.
The financial interests of military leaders in mining operations underline the conflict's complexity, with significant military autonomy from Jakarta persisting post-Suharto. Current Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto's policies continue to reinforce military power in the region.
