Indra Begins Construction of Spain's First Gallium Nitride Chip Factory in Vigo
Indra has announced the start of construction of Spain's first factory for gallium nitride-based chips in Vigo. The project, initiated in late January 2026, is in partnership with SPARC Foundry, which holds a 37% stake. This facility aims to meet the growing global demand for gallium nitride technology, essential in defense and aerospace sectors, and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. The shift from gallium arsenide to gallium nitride is deemed critical for modern electronics due to improved power, density, and thermal robustness.

Indra is establishing Spain's first gallium nitride chip factory in Vigo, initiated in late January 2026. The project is a collaboration with SPARC Foundry, which owns 37% of the venture. This factory is set to address increasing global demand for gallium nitride technology, pivotal for the defense and aerospace industries, and reduce reliance on imports. The transition from gallium arsenide, a semiconductor previously dominant in high-frequency electronics, to gallium nitride is crucial, offering tenfold power, wider bandgap capabilities, and enhanced thermal robustness, thus eliminating the need for extensive cooling systems.
