INNIO and Net Zero Innovation Hub Achieve 3 MW Hydrogen Backup Power for Data Centers
INNIO Group and the Net Zero Innovation Hub have successfully demonstrated a 3 MW backup power system using 100% hydrogen. This innovation addresses the increasing demand for reliable, low-carbon energy solutions in data centers.

INNIO Group and the Net Zero Innovation Hub have completed a pioneering demonstration of a 3 MW hydrogen-fueled backup power system for data centers. This project utilized INNIO's Jenbacher engine, typically powered by natural gas, to operate solely on hydrogen in a controlled environment, confirming its potential as a critical power source.
The demonstration was attended by technical experts from Microsoft, Google, and Data4 for performance evaluation. While hydrogen generators offer a low-carbon alternative, challenges such as high costs and immature infrastructure may hinder widespread adoption in mission-critical applications. The ongoing development in this sector indicates a potential shift towards more sustainable energy solutions for data centers.
